I have had the painters in this week. On day one, I was chatting away to the head painter about "paint colours" when in the background, my two eldest boys were squabbling. I said to the painter, "I wish they would stop, it's very annoying. He said to me, "Sharon, enjoy every annoying moment of their arguing, wrestling, squabbling" that you can. My 20 year old boy went prawn trawling last year, the boat sank, my boy drowned, we don't have closure because no body was found, and every day I wish I could hear the annoying sounds of my two boys arguing." Well, boy did I take stock. He's right, we should appreciate more in life, even the annoying things.

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Cate, the owner of Queen B candles . What a lovely, kind and generous soul she is and definitely one who "walks her talk". She is passionate about what she does. Her company make the most exquisite candles that are made from pure beeswax. They are beautiful, have the faintest smell of honey and are HEALTHY to burn. The beautiful Cate

The main alternative to beeswax is paraffin - representing over 95% of all candles sold.

Paraffin is a petro-chemical by-product which, when burned, emits a toxic smoke (for toxicity information go to http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/rtecs/rv55730.html). Paraffin is the grayish-black sludge oozing out of petroleum refineries.

To make this waxy sludge more 'palatable' it is then bleached (which creates dioxins), processed and then texturised using carcinogenic chemicals. Candle makers then take this bleached, toxic wax, and colour it with synthetic colourants and artificial scents selling these candles to the unsuspecting public to burn in their living room!! Fantastic!

The toxic smoke from the paraffin candles covers your walls, furniture, carpet and curtains, not to mention the inside of your lungs and your skin.

In addition, many paraffin candles are made with a lead core or zinc core wick, further polluting your environment with toxic smoke. There is a lot more profit in paraffin.

A similar study was conducted in Australia by Mike van Alphen which concluded "Modelling of a number of residential scenarios and detailed exposure assessments readily demonstrate that daily candle* burning of several hours duration would result in elevated blood lead levels. The burning of multiple candles in a confined space for greater than 3-6 hours daily would readily result in severe Pb poisoning." (go to http://www.lead.org.au/mr/9-8-99.html)

Went to Michael Buble last night. All I can say is WOW. He is everything the critics are saying and more. He was fabulous. He is so talented AND hilarious. He also did a Michael Jackson song (imitating Michael Jackson) and you could have sworn it was MJ singing.

I loved that he was so grateful. He thanked everyone for taking the time to come and see him right down to the babysitters you were arranged so that the mums and dad's could be there.

Rod Laver Arena was at capacity and the crowd were jumping. We were entertained first by the fabulous "Naturally 7". They too brought the house down. If you haven't heard of them, they are worthwhile googling.

Our seats were unbelievable. Frond row side so we were slightly elevated - we could almost touch him. I liked though that he went through the crowd to the middle and performed 3 songs on the tiny stage there so everyone could get a closer look.

We had a great night - THANK YOU MB. x

...Flooding in Melbourne

My goodness, this is what I faced last night, on my way to pick up my husband as, his car had been "written off" in the flash flood that we experienced last night here in Melbourne. The aftermath of cyclone Anthony, the cyclone before Yasi. It was quite scary - I was caught in "waves" literally out of the blue. Lucky I was in a 4wd, as the 5 sedans (& 1 ute) in front of me were stranded. I cannot even comprehend what our Queensland neighbours must have gone through.

Oh well, a car can be replaced. Happy weekend all and stay safe - wherever you are.

Well Happy New Year to you. We are just back from a fabulous 2 weeks down at the beach and I feel totally renewed and ready for all the wonderful things that 2011 will bring.

Out with the old, and that definitely includes toxic so called friendships. Here's to new friends, and wonderful old friends, wonderful family, new experiences, new places to visit, making new memories and to lots of good health and happiness.

Just had to share this with you. My youngest is still getting over it!!!! Ben was looking out the family room window and "gazing and grazing" when suddenly, he was stuttering at me. He couldn't get the words out. I said what's wrong, whats wrong. He was pointing, still stuttering then all of a sudden blurted out the words 'THERE'S A CHICKEN IN THE BACK YARD". I looked outside and sure enough, there was "a chicken in the back yard". Here are some shot's that he took on my iphone. I thought it was amusing but Ben thought it was quite extraordinary - "A CHICKEN IN THE BACK YARD". Don't know about you, but growing up in the suburbs, it really wasn't THAT unusual for people to have "CHICKENS IN THE BACK YARD". Our dog Charlie thought all his Christmas (dinners) had come at once!!!

I have posted this photo before - isn't it fun? The rain just keeps coming down in old Melbourne town - I love it. Just as well, the forecast doesn't look like it is going to change any time soon. We were down the coast over the weekend looking for a place to spend over the summer. Seems like most people are well and truly looking forward to the warmth - most of the houses have already been taken but we did manage to find a little gem, right on the beach. Hope you are enjoying the weather where ever you are.

I weighed everything up (apple mac laptop versus ipad) and took the plunge. I bought my IPAD yesterday and I love it. Thank you so much for leaving your comments and emails. It really did make it easier for me to make my decision. Lovely Brooke over at the fabulous Velvet and Linen (you really must check out her blog if you haven't already - she and her husband Steve are so talented) emailed me saying how handy her IPAD was on her last trip ie she used it for getting directions, finding hotels, restaurants and antique shops. I am sure I will love my ipad more if I could drag it away from my youngest!!! Have a happy week.

I am passionate about the future (and current status) of our planet and the health of it's people. I don't know why it is necessary to use chemicals in our foods and our cleaning products when there are better and safer options. Actually, I do know why - it comes down to making money, the corporates are greedy and don't think about "the people or the planet". The sooner we can spread the word on natural products that actually work (see below) and organic foods that are nutrient rich and are not genetically modified like so much of our food is, the better. I think most of you would be horrified if you knew what was in our foods without our knowledge. A few years ago, I purchased a little booklet from Greenpeace that listed many of the GM (genetically modified) foods. I thought I had a sound knowledge of what I was feeding my family. Boy did I come down to earth with a thud. I thought I was doing the right thing in buying good old fashioned "butter" for example. Well obviously butter is much better than margarine (margarine is one molecule away from plastic!!!!!!!) but to my horror good old Allowrie butter is full of GM ingredients. Best to go for organic butters that are fortunately in nearly every supermarket now.

I have been using natural, safe cleaning products for a few years now. Two of my faves are Murchison-Hume and Tri-Nature.

Murchison-Hume's products are spectacular. They actually do what they say they will, and their packaging is very glamorous. I use all of their products but one that I particularly like is the "Boys Bathroom Cleaner" - yes with 3 boys, I can testify to it's efficacy.

An Australian company started by the very entrepreneurial Max Kater and her husband Peter. A Sydney girl (American ex-pat) who obviously had a very clear vision and went for it. The company is now exporting all over the globe. I am also pleased to see Murchison-Hume is on TVSN (my beloved shoppping channel on FOXTEL) and has a show scheduled for this Saturday at 3.30pm.

Tri-Nature have many cleaning products, but the one I like the most is their dishwasher powder. If someone has been unlucky to have been diagnosed with cancer, one of the first things the Oncologist will tell them is to stop using dishwashing machine powder (e.g. Finish) because it is so toxic. Go figure? Why is it on the market in the first place?????????????? Tri-Nature's dishwashing powder is so safe you can actually eat it.

Quentin Bryce. What a very stylish Lady we have representing our country as Governor -General. And she didn't get the position of first female Govenor- General on style and good looks alone. There are a number of "Firsts" for Mrs Bryce - she was the first female admitted to the bar in Queensland, the first director of the Queensland Women's Information, the first woman to be appointed to the TC Beirne School of Law at the University of Qld faculty. She has six honorary degrees, has been awarded the Australian Sports Medal for Services to Women's Cricket, and the Centeneary Medal for Service to Australian society in business leadership. Her appointments include an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in recognition of service to the community, particularly to women and children, in 2003 was elevated as a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) and in the same year was invested as a Dame of Grace of The most Venerable Order of The Hospital of St John of Jerusalem.

Well, don't know about you but I am exhausted just reading this amazing CV and all the while maintaining a marriage and family. Girls, get your daughters reading this - just proves again what an amazing time and country we are living in with such wonderful opportunities.

Hello there lovely girls. Does anybody else share my IPAD love. I don't have one yet (I say yet, as I am leaving hints to MM as I think it would make a fabulous birthday present!!!!) Anyway, how easy would it be to read your fave book/mag anywhere. When I go on holiday, my hand luggage is always so full of magazines and books - I would like to travel a little lighter and the IPAD delivers on that one - more space for those 'shopping must haves'. Granted, you can't beat a good book (in the physical sense I mean) but just for convenience it would be fabulous. I "test drove" one last week and it was easy to navigate (just like all apple products). There are a few drawbacks though. I am not sure if I should wait until there is an updated model or dive right in now. You can't download pics to blogger for example. Although I believe there will be an "app" one day - but when? and also no usb ports or disc drive. But for convenience sake (particularly when travelling) are they really necessary?

I was "perusing" the lovely Brooke Giannetti's blog at Velvet and Linen and she has found a fabulous interiors "app" to download and read on the IPAD. There are over 200,000 apps to purchase now so I am sure I will find something!!!

I am such a lover on my iphone and imac that it just seems like a natural progression to get the IPAD. Apple have just released their new mini imac too. Oh my goodness, should I go for that one instead? Decisions, decisions, but seriously does anyone out there (yes, including all of you lovely "lurkers") know any interesting info about either one? I would really love to hear if anybody knows about any "can't live without" apps for the IPAD too.

Margaret and Joy are two very inspirational and creative women whom obviously (after reading a little about their story below) complement each other in more ways than one.

They were kind enough to allow me to use one of their beautiful images as my header.

Joy Kilpatrick and Margaret Elman met many years ago as creative directors at an advertising agency in New York City. This is where they first fell in love with food photography, the ongoing quest for the ultimate farmer's market salad recipe and each other's design sensibilities. They worked together on a variety of brands, including Nestle and Kraft Foods and created many campaigns with some of the industry's most amazing photographers, stylists and directors.

Eventually, Margaret and Joy went on to start a bespoke furniture design company together called Chair Couture that has been featured in design magazines throughout the world.

And now, in another attempt to follow the path of creativity and self-actualization, they are shooting together and loving every
minute of it.

...Dressing Table Vignette

I love my Victorian dressing table, my husband bought it for me as a surprise 30th birthday present (quite a few years ago!!!). I love dressing tables in general, there are so many different types, from antique to ultra modern but I wonder if they are going out of "fashion" Do you remember "Carrie's" mirrored DT in the first Sex and the City movie? Loved it.

If you look through the mirror, you will just see my own "Time Framed" memorabilia. If you didn't already know, this is what I do. My lovely clients give me their personal memorabilia, I then make a "vignette" of the items, write about each one of them, then have them boxed framed. They can be themed ie, wedding, travels or a complete story of your life. If you would like to see more of my work, please go here. Hmmmm an interesting time. My eldest son is nearly at the end of his uni exams (until next term) and middle son in the middle of year 12 exams. They are sitting the GAT exam today which can't be studied for - more of a general knowledge test. Thank goodness little son (grade 6) doesn't have exams right now. Can't wait for the holidays to start next week.

I know I have been talking about alot of movies lately, but another to add to the "must see" list is "Letters to Juliet".

Oh how beautiful it was. A love story starring the fabulous Vanessa Redgrave, what a gentle soul - you just want to kiss her. Amanda Seyfried was her usual lovely self (great actress, so natural) and not to mention our very own (Sydney born) Christopher Egan. He has his British accent downpat and I must say, he is very delicious.

The whole movie makes you want to visit Verona RIGHT NOW.

I purchased Gold Class tickets for my husband Nick, my youngest and myself to see "The Prince of Persia". I didn't really think I would enjoy it, but since I am always dragging them to my "chick flicks" I thought it was their turn. Well, wasn't I surprised - it was fabulous. I have always loved the old "LV" trunks used as storage/tables although, they are very hard to find and expremely expensive. I think I have found a new fave. What do you think of this beauty, complete with brass and leather "hardware" and only $377. The only down side is, she is custom made in NY but where there is a will, there is a way. I have started a new tradition this year. As all my friends know, I love Christmas and a few years ago for my fortieth birthday, I was lucky enough to be given a few Swarovski crystal ornament decorations and Tiffany Christmas charms. I have been adding to these over the last couple of years also including Cathy Penton's beautiful charms with my family members names on them and various other Christmas themed charms. The Tiffany charms are hung by strips of fine white organza ribbon or fine silver chains. These are all hung from a lovely tree with dark chocolate coloured limbs with smatterings of snow. I hope to post some pictures shortly (when the children and I can find the usb connection for the camera - so frustrating. We had better find it soon, we have a few family Christmas functions coming up). But in the meantime, here is a pretty picture of some crystal Christmas ornaments.

My two younger boys and husband love camping. I have tried to love it. I have even tried to like it. They do everything possible to make my camping experience comfortable, but it's still not something I enjoy. It cannot be said I haven't tried - I have, many times.

Isn't this a pretty picture. Well, this weekend I will finish my Christmas shopping. I will brave the crowds first thing in the morning so I shouldn't find it too hard to get a park if I leave early.Then if I am super organised, I will have them all wrapped by Sunday. I love wrapping - it gets all my creative juices flowing. I bought the most beautiful wrapping paper this year. I usually have different themes every year. Last year, all my wrapping paper was gloss white with different colour wide grosgrain ribbon. This year, I have three different colour papers. Red, gold and silver and the paper is made up of glitter. I have beautiful glitter ribbons in the same colours but will alternate the ribbons with the paper ie red paper, silver ribbon etc. It sparkles at night under the tree when the twinkle lights hit the glitter and in the morning too when the sun shines on them. The paper is a beautiful thick quality and believe it or not, I got them all from Big W.

Haven't had much time to post this week. Have booked a week away with the girls for a bit of R & R and pampering but husband has decided at the 11th hour to have a fiftieth birthday party. Just means I have to get everything organised now so I am not panicking when I get back. Oooh I can't wait, friends, warm weather, lots of spa treatments and no cooking or sticking to schedules. Not many posts this week, very busy with work and the rest of the time trying to thaw out (icy cold here - quite unlike my dear friends in Brisbane 36 celcius and bushfires!!!-very weird). Anyway, how cool is this bike? My kids are a bit too big for this one now, but a few years ago it would definitely have been on my "must have" list.

Finding Balance

Work is so busy at the moment which is fantastic, lots of changes, all for the good but I find my time management skills could be much improved. Suggestions anyone?

I am an avid list maker - I couldn't get by without one but I am finding I need more balance, more time to meditate perhaps! Couldn't get through my day without that one either.

Well, here I was, in the middle of cooking dinner, and all of a sudden, this horrific noise from the front of the house. The kids come running downstairs, "muuuummmmm, someone's gone through the front fence".

We all ran outside and there was my poor neighbour, standing there saying, "my brakes failed, my brakes failed".

Oh well, could be worse, no one was hurt. She did a really good job of it though, the double gates, the side gate, two posts and the letterbox - totally obliterated. I was only saying last week that I would like the fence painted! I should be careful what I ask for!!!@#$

It's Raining, it's pouring

It's pouring in Melbourne, and so warm considering it's winter ( although Spring is in sight!!!) - 16.5 celsius (62 farenheit) overnight!!! We need the rain, our dams are about a quarter full. So nice (and rare) that the whole family is home together on a weekend. I think a roast will be on the menu for dinner. Enjoy the rest of your weekend girls.

Lovely mild weather here in Melbourne. Not swimming weather yet, well, not for most people anyway. My husband is an "iceberger" which means he swims in the sea baths most mornings (up at 5.30am) , rain, hail or shine, summer AND winter. The members just love it and the colder the better they all say. Although, the majority of the population think they are mad, there must be something in it. Alot of the members are over 80 and have been doing it for over 50 years!!!!!! Think I will stick to a brisk walk! Hope the rest of your weekend is a "warm" one.

We are only half way through winter here in Melbourne and tomorrows temperature is predicated to be 18c. We haven't even had the heater on the whole weekend. Quite unheard of (although it is Melbourne - notorious for having all four seasons in one day, so a heatwave in the middle of winter may not be too unusual!!!). Ok, so 18c isn't quite a heatwave, but it is reminding me of the warmer weather to come. Hope it is nice and warm where-ever you are.

After yesterdays long anticipated wait for the news of Jordan's operation and whether it was a success or not - we are all breathing a huge sigh of relief - it was a huge success. Fabulous news. We can now focus on the weekend ahead with a happy heart. My 10 year old Ben, is having his birthday party. We are taking a group of boys to gold class to see Harry Potter and then afterwards a sleepover. I think butterscotch pancakes will be on the menu Sunday morning. Have a great weekend girls.
